Industry and Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiudeen has apologised to the members of the judiciary and regretted the pain of mind, if any, caused to the Mannar Magistrate with regard to the contempt of court charges against him in Appeal Court
The petition alleging Contempt of Court was filed by a fraternity of senior lawyers against the minister. It was taken up for inquiry by Justice P.W.D.C. Jayathilaka.
The minister in his response said the telephone which was registered under his name had been used to make the telephone calls and expressed regret its unauthorised use.
He said he had the highest respect for the members of the judiciary and condemned any act which violated the dignity, esteem and independence of the judiciary.
The minister said he regretted any pain of mind caused to Magistrate Judeson.
The contempt of court proceedings were terminated sequent to the apology and assurances given by the minister and with the consent of both parties.(S.S.Selvanayagam)
