Australian student allegedly raped

Police are investigating the alleged rape of an Australian University student during an excursion to the Gendawana Rock in the seas near Ambalangoda on Thursday.

The student who had stayed in a hotel in Patabendimulla, Ambalangoda had been serving as a volunteer at a turtle hatchery in Ambalangoda as part of an academic project since last December.

She had been allegedly raped by a youth when she had been isolated from the group that had gone on the excursion with her. The group had consisted of eight persons including a foreign man and a woman apart from the victim.

Police have initiated investigations following a complaint by her. (By Hemantha de Silva)
