Australia beat Sri Lanka by 32 runs to level the five-match One-Day International (ODI) series in the fifth and final match at Hobart on Wednesday.
The visitors got off to a good start as the openers Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan added 57 runs for the first wicket in 73 balls. However, Xavier Doherty struck three quick wickets to reduce Sri Lanka to 77 for four in the 21st over of the innings.
Angelo Mathews revived the innings for Sri Lanka with a couple of handy partnerships with Kushal Perera and Jeevan Mendis. However, the hosts kept picking up wickets at regular intervals and ensured that the run-rate was under control. Nonetheless, Mathews managed to score his 13th half-century in ODIs.
Moises Henriques and Doherty picked up three wickets each while Mitchell Johnson scalped two wickets.
Earlier, Phil Hughes slammed his second One-Day International century against Sri Lanka as Australia managed to reach 247 for five after being put in to bat first.
Hughes slammed thirteen fours and one six. He was unbeaten on 138 along with Moises Henriques.
Glenn Maxwell, who replaced Michael Clarke in the final ODI at Hobart, scored a mere nine runs as he was caught at extra cover by Lahiru Thirmanne.
David Warner and Matthew Wade opened the innings for Australia, putting up a partnership of 31 runs, when Dilshan bowled the former for 10. Wade soon departed as he was dismissed for a leg before wicket by Nuwan Kulasekara.
Brief Scores: Australia 247 for 5 in 50 overs (Phil Hughes 138*, David Hussey 34; Tillakaratne Dilshan 1 for 22) bt Sri Lanka 215 all-out in 48.3 overs (Angelo Mathews 67, Mahela Jayawardene 38; Xavier Doherty 3 for 21, Moises Henriques 3 for 22) by 32 runs. (Source: Cricket Country)

"fake" leader is the most successful captain in the history of sl, who then is the "real" leader? Dilshan?

No wonder. This was like a final. We dont usually win finals, even small tournament finals, not since 2003, since the golden days of Aravinda/Jayasuriya/Murali when they were at the peak of their careers. Problem is we do not have big match pressure absorbing players and single-handed match winners. No single match-winning batsman to replace Jayasuriya. He could score a fast hindred after even 10 innings; nobody in the current team could do even that. We are in big trouble for the next 5 years at least.

hello there cricket expert, I'm sure you are well aware of pitch conditions in Sydney and Hobart. Can you explain why the ball came on the bat much better in Sydney, while it was difficult to even get it off the block in Hobart?

Team is OK, Dilshan utilization as a bowler is good. new approach. but Jeevan Mendis was not utilized. Captains irresponsible inning made to lose. When he lost first of all, who is will take responsibility. If he came with Mathews I believe could have won. Will see future how Mathews do captaincy, after Arjuna we did not see good captain.

in them golden days we got soundly beaten in Australia - 1995 was an exception. Golden boy ranatunga led the team in a disastrous tour of 1999 to Aus, followed by more embarrassments ever since 2006 the side has been performing credibly in Aussie - in fact we have a better Win loss ratio against them.

it is indeed frustrating to have not Won the series but i really don't understand all this criticism. For a side that got hammered in the test series bowling out Aussies for 74 in their own turf itself was an achievement. We all know SL choke in 'finals' don't we? no surprises there just learn to accept it...

Dont be ungrateful. Mahela may have made mistakes. But he is a genuine leader and has done well to the country. Lets rise up and give him a good farewell for a man who has done lot to SL cricket.

When we loose Test Cricket matches we put the blame on IPL saying shorter version has ruined test cricket. Now we could not win the series blame it on BCCI / IPL. Lets wait for the 20-20 outcome now. .

Very disappointing...........what I really can't understand is that we needed only 5 runs an over and waited till the last to blast the bowlers.....what the hell was Matthews thinking ? was he hoping that he will hit every ball for a boundary .......i know it was slow wicket but it wasn't a difficult one to score 5 runs an over....................very poor thinking process.

With the fact that SL chased the 76 target in 3rd match by losing 6 wickets how Mahela argued that he could chase the rain affected match like piece of cake? Even here 200 with much difficult.
