Police arrested a person who mortgaged fake jewellery to the sum of Rs.2.8 million to a bank in Ampara.
He had mortgaged the fake jewellery on several occasions between December 28, 2011 and January 30, the police said.
Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that a complaint was lodged on Friday by the bank. He was taken into custody by a special team from the Ampara police.
The 29-year-old suspect, a resident of Akkaraipattu, was produced before the Ampara Magistrate and was remanded till February 8. (Supun Dias)
