Video: Albino turtle mystery: All accounted for

Turtle hatchery owner Chandrasiri Abrew, who the focus of much media attention lately was arrested by the Matara Anti Vice squad in connection with the albino turtle going missing, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion after the police found that the statements given by the owner and his employees were contradictory.

He had first complained that he had four albino turtles in the hatchery with one of them going missing. Subsequently two albino turtles were found in his daughter’s home in Ambalangoda yesterday while the other two were in his hatchery at Kosgoda. Police raided her house after being tipped off that Mr. Abrew was seen carrying sea water to the daughter’s house from the day that the turtle was reported missing.

Investigations had revealed that the four turtles had been located and as such the police believe that the owner had made a false complaint for reasons best known to him.

The suspect will be produced at the Balapitiya Magistrate’s Courts tomorrow.

The albino turtle said to be worth more than Rs.35 million was reported lost sometime in December. (Sanath Desmond and Hematha de Silva)
