A woman gold smuggler arrested

A 46-year-old Sri Lankan woman was arrested at the Katunayake Airport last evening while attempting to smuggle two gold biscuits worth Rs.2,980,000, Customs spokesman Leslie Gamini said.

He said the biscuits were concealed in a pouch, wrapped round her body.

Mr. Gamini said the arrest was made when they found the woman, who was awaiting a flight to Chennai behaving in a suspicious manner.

The gold biscuits weighing 596 grammes were confiscated and the woman, who is a resident of Gothatuwa released on the payment of a fine of Rs.50,000. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
