The most righteous statement to make would be to transform a society where criminals are not produced When the country has an accepted legal system in place, it is shameful and dangerous for a senior minister to say eliminate criminals and to threaten the lawyers not to appear for them, a lawyers’ collective said yesterday.

Expressing its strong disapproval of a recent statement made by Public Security Minister Tiran Alles, the Young Lawyers Association told the media that no criminal should be punished until proven guilty in a court of law.

“We vehemently condemn the statement made by Minister Tiran Alles that it is not a sin to eliminate the criminals, which gives an impression to somebody that the country does not have a proper legal system,” Secretary Young Lawyers Association Attorney Jayantha Dehiaththage said.

Addressing a recent passing out parade of police special motorcycle squadron that was assembled to fight the underworld and narcotics trafficking, the subject minister said “it is not a sin to eliminate criminals like murderers, drug dealers and underworld operatives”.

“Alles being the Public Security Minister should be responsible for the security of each and every person in the society, be it a criminal or not. Until proven guilty every criminal is a suspect. If the criminals are to be shot or eliminated without a fair trial, what shall we tell their families?” Attorney Dehiaththage questioned.

“We have observed that most of these criminals found in the underworld and those connected to drug-related crimes are victims of poverty and from the lower levels of society. The most righteous statement to make would be to transform a society where criminals are not produced,” Dehiaththage said.

Attorney Thanuka Nandasiri said it is shameful for a minister to threaten the country’s lawyers saying that their names would be publicized for appearing for criminals.

“We do not have any requirement to protect criminals. Until proven guilty every offender is a suspect. If nobody is appearing for a suspect, how could that person prove his innocence?

Tiran Alles should know that lawyers are also part of the judicial system like judges. The minister has no right to defame lawyers by making such a statement,” Attorney Nandasiri said.

Yes, innocent until proven guilty because these so called young lawyers know how to get the criminals released if they are paid well. There are a fraction of lawyers who have become wealthy thanks to money given by the drug mafia.

If The Lawyers Collective is so sincere about the welfare of the country, they can start by cleaning their own stabels first before pointing fingers at others. Bring a resolution for the lawyers asking them to declare their proper earnings

People know how corrupt most of our lawyers are. Most do not even issue receipts for the charges to a vase taxes, how they drag cases for years in order to fleece their customers. So better stop preaching. You are no better than our corrupt politicians.

Not only young lawyers even children from Kindergarten can flay Tiran for his irresponsible statement. Only the uneducated get elected to Parliament and Tiran is an example of the poor quality of representatives we have in Parliament. He had poor reputation in the corporate sector and he has taken his poor standards into Government too.

I wonder what all the above commentators would say if one of your own was accused and condemned as a criminal ? Per the Hon. Minister, an accusation alone is enough to condemn and execute. No proof needed ! Would you be supporting Minister Alles words then and applaud the lack of "useless" lawyers? I suspect not...

These are the standard of ministers today. They feel that they could implement their law above the law of the nation. It is also a method used by them to get rid of some criminals who could 'spill their beans' in courts. Absolute shame.

We have all grown up except Tiran Saturday, 04 May 2024 06:07 PM

There is no such thing as “sin”. It is either a crime or no crime. Sin is just a primitive word for being a bad boy.

Fair enough. The earning potential seriously reduces if all those cases that drag on for years no end are not going to be there.

Yes, undoubtedly, there is no honest legal system prevails in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's judiciary system has produced many a criminals under daily basis with the help of CROOKED lawyers practicing the law not to protect the JUSTICE but EARN MONEY. We can understand, that even pavement hawkers are mocking the Judiciary and its JUSTICE SYSTEM the way it practices in Sri Lanka.

A good number of comments are made by people who don't see the big picture. Pettiness. Pitiful to an observer like me.

If you know with absolute certainity with hard intelligence that a person is a hardcore criminal, then why waste tax payers money to keep them under custody? In any case they continue to operate behind bars and with the help of corrupt officers, politicians and black coats, lead a luxurious life style. The human rights/democracy Ngo babies will make noises as per their international agenda. But the majority general public of Lanka are lauding it. This is the sub continent after all and it need methods appropriate for it. Just use a cost effective locally made bullet and close the chapter.

I also maintain that our legal system is highly unsittable for a country like our in the present state. It appears to be only favourable to the lawyers. For the victim or complainant, there is no justice done, as justice delayed is justice denied. Delays are due to our legal system, where the case is called and postponed. Every time the accused is brought from Remand Prison to courts and taken back. And all accused and convicted are maintained there with public money. But the lawyers changing their fee, whether the case is heard or not. What irony. As soon as the case is called, both lawyers approach the bench with their diaries, and thus the hint is passed to the Judge. This must be the only profession that charges like that. Our legal system is a serious hindrance to our development. But neither the lawyers nor the legislators (MPs) want such laws changed.
