National People's Power (NPP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today they would win the battle to obtain the Local government election by hook or by crook for the betterment of the people.
He told a protest rally at Lipton Circus in Colombo today that their battle to force the government to hold the LG polls could not be turned back by firing tear gas or water cannons.
"We will win this battle for the sake of the people who are dying without medicine, youth who are without jobs, farmers, fishing community and the working people who are suffering. We will win this battle to create a country free of corruption, drugs and looting public money and to create a lawful country. This is the responsibility of the generation. We will win this struggle by hook or by crook ," he said.
He requested all the professionals, security forces, farmers, fisherfolk and Woking people to rally round the NPP to ensure that their democratic right is obtained.
He said the government was plotting to postpone the LG polls as they are perturbed and frightened by the massive people's force joining with the NPP to eliminate the family rule in the country.
"The power was exchanged among a few families in Sri Lanka so far. For the first time in the country, people have come foward to form a government of the down-trodden people. That is why, they are so perturbed. If the power was to transit beween Rajapaksa's, Wickremesinghe's and Premadasa's, they will never postpone the election in this manner," he said.
Dissanayake said Ranil Wickremesinghe would not be able to suppress the people's force by postponing the election by a month or so and added that more and more will keep joining the NPP. (Ajith Siriwardana)

Local government election are not going to do anything to impact the national economy. By their very nature they deal with mere local issues and not national one. Opposition disinformation abd propaganda at its best. And our gullible people are being manipulated. In the meantime they will successfully destroy the foreign exchange generating tourism sector yet again just as it just starting to breath life again. That is their style of helping the hurting people. All jog wash.

Seems like someone has taken a bait of RW's propaganda! National economy and people's franchise are two independent factors. Franchise is a constitutional right of the people. It is the supreme law. Nothing is above it. Not you, not opposition, not RW, not the economy. When people are not granted their right of franchise to voice their opinion about how they are being ruled, they will take other means to express their dissatisfaction against the rulers, which will lead to anarchy! Anarchy leads to total shutdown of the economy like #GoHomeGota days.

What nonsense. It will show how unpopular this government is. If what you say is correct why are they so frightened to hold them? It is you who is gullible if you think well-healed tourists from the West will arrive here with no elections held. These westerners are clued up with freedom of expression, deocractic rights etc. and will not come here with a Hitler like leader.Only Chinese and other eatern tourists who spend very little will come.

If the LG elections are not going to impact the national economy why aren't they held. But again you stated that it would destroy the foreign exchange. Doesn't it a part of national economy.

The younger generation came to streets as a result of corrupt politicians bankrupted the country during their 74years rule.Now they do not have a good future atleast for another 10years unless the corrupt are chased away and a new political culture is established in SL. They are against corrupt politicians in the helm and protecting themselves for their survival

This local election is different. It will be a confidence vote on the present administration and the system. The outlook for the country will depend on this election although local by name.

I grant the truth of what Indika has said in the first comment. Economic Affairs are important, but there's much more at stake. Chance has decreed that it is the Local Government Elections that are due, and they must be held. Given the overall situation, the LGEs assume a significance much greater than maintaining drains and approving building plans. We are content with what has been offered, although Parliamentary Elections would have mad more sense.

We saw and experienced a perfect demonstration of the lawlessness of this group today. They tried every trick in the book to circumvent and disobey the court order. It comes from guys masquerading as committed to bring law and discipline and do the right things. Their actions speak louder than words. The ghost of their past still accompanies them where ever they go. They are still what they previously were. Their ways have not changed although the means adopted may have been tweaked in an attempt to rebrand a discarded and despised product.

Which family (Rajapakse, Premadasa, Wickremesinghe, Bandaranaike or even A K Dissanayake) rules the country is totally immaterial!!? What is important is Rule of Law, prevent LG elections and result doesn’t change the National outlook of country and way forward, except Pradeshiya Sabha and Municipalities!!! Indiscriminate damage to property, and sources of income (Tourism) and other sources of FOREX earnings, which is important and Material, to ensure future prosperity and immediate relief of the country’s economy to grow and be self-sufficient and able to repay the unbelievable amount of foreign loans!!! That is the immediate NEED OF THE HOUR, which please respect and adhere to, as none else is more important!!!??? 1 or 2 months postponement is not going to change the peoples’ minds on whom to vote, but your actions may cause irreparable damage to economy!!! Tourism is not something, like your switching ON and OFF electric lights!!!

Indika look at the composition of this government which was established by 69 laks of people 's vote to day.The leaders of that government was chased by the people and now this government was headed by a person who has no mandate of the people of this country. This election will show whether the people are with this government or they need to change the government. Its imperative to hold the election if not the country will certainly go from bad to worst.

Indika - Unlike a few years ago, majority of tourists are embarrassed and shamed to tell their tales about their experiences in Sri Lanka. Food shortages, electricity cut outs, transport problems, ramshackle ACs and sky high prices of everything including entry fees to historic sites @ 47 times the locals r charged. In fact they call it "the most expensive poor country in the world" Everthing designed from Visa fees to rip the tourist to its bones at every turn.

My previous comment did not suggest that local government elections should not be held. It was more about the type of behaviour we witnessed yesterday, dispite a court order. If there is no law and order, tourisim will be adversely impacted. We may talk of the wonderful product we have, but one serious travel warning and we could go back and entire season or more. Leaders and their organisations need to set a high standard of being an example. They could learn from Martin Luther King Jr. Further, local government elections could do sweet nothing to address "people who are dying without medicine, youth who are without jobs, farmers, fishing community and the working people who are suffering". To give such hopes to people is nothing but ingenuous. Anyway it is heartning to see healthy and respectful discssion on here.

Indika - It is a constitutional right of the people to protest against injustice. It was a peaceful protest until Police stop the movement of people. Court did not given orders to stop peaceful protest but restrict entering to government buildings/ areas which is not intended by the protesters.
