Will start importing eggs again to cater to demand during new year season

Colombo, Dec. 15 (Daily Mirror) - Considering the high demand and shortage during the upcoming New Year festive season, Trade Minister Nalin Fernando firmly said that he will start importing eggs again to cater to the demand.

The decision was announced following a meeting with egg producers.

During the discussion with the Trade Minister, the egg producers claimed that they were unable to reduce the egg prices until the end of Christmas and told the Minister that they had taken a collective decision not to sell eggs in the retail market for less than Rs. 55.

The egg producers requested the Minister not tell them to bring the egg price below Rs. 45 until the end of Christmas, and that the egg prices will come down automatically after December 20.

However, the Minister told the egg producers that maintaining the egg selling price at Rs. 55 cannot be continued. During discussions with the Minister, the egg producers said that bakery owners and intermediaries were responsible for the sudden egg price increase.

If this seasonal situation continues, we cannot keep faith in the Sinhala Tamil New Year, so we will have to import eggs before that.

Therefore, the Minister firmly said that he would start importing eggs again to cater to the demand.

A little too late Mr. Minister , you should not have stopped importing eggs knowing the mentality of our egg producers. Keep on importing eggs until they reduce the prices otherwise even in the April season we will face the same situ as now.

Everything is imported in this island. There are kick backs from awarding tenders and import business. People don't want to work in farming. They prefer to migrate. Farmers don't get enough support and incentives from the government to sustain their livelihood. The middle man only prospers. This broken system needs to be fixed by experienced and knowledgeable government ministers. What a shame that the ancient prosperity under kings can no longer be achieved in a modern world.

Agree with you. The horse has bolted out of the open gate. Without continued egg imports this madness with the inability of local producers inconveniences the public. The egg producers always have excuses for prices going up. Egg production is not something that needs to happen here if the prices are like how they are.

Silly people never have the IQ to address the illness always the symtoms. Why dont you provide animal and poultry feeds at market value plus cost? People stop using animal feeds because its come to a stage where the pricess are increaing with rapidly reducing quality. Open market high quality corn sells at Rs.34 per pund. Try and get it in Srilanka, it will be Rs. 100 or more. Why? Again import restrictions, tariffs, bribes etc. Until the Government is changed and all these corrupt and uneducated in charge are kicked out nothing will change.

News has that Sathosa to sell eggs at Rs. 35. Minister must disregard these troublesome egg businessman, who want to keep prices well above Rs. 55. because they decide to to their business that way. The egg farmer is like OPEC oil cartel, a terrible mafia which makes are public poorer for their unfair cartel activity.

Even after 75 years of independence incapable of producing our own eggs Whom do you fire the politician or the egg producer. Why not import a few SUVS or luxury vehicles so that we can visit the countryside to find out what is wrong.And dont forget to buy some eggs , we will be passing Three Acre Farms its on the way

Mr. Minister by encouraging and supporting youths in Sri Lanka to commence poultry Farming to meet the demand expected during month of April or before, you can not expect any commission. Therefore it is better to import eggs, which will swell your pocket as well.

It is better to buy from India, pay freight, pay clearing, pay commissions and still sell at 35/- with a profit rather than forcing local ones at 60/-.
