Will not deviate from IMF programme, but will renegotiate terms and conditions: NPP

Colombo, March 6 (Daily Mirror) - The National People’s Power (NPP) said it would not derail the IMF programme if it won the presidency but would renegotiate its terms and conditions on implementations since the current austerity measures had burdened people and the attempts of the government to sell off public assets would bring severe economic consequences to the country.

NPP economic council member Prof. Anil Jayantha said his party would also seek speedy actions on the debt restructuring process.

Also, he said that a homegrown solution to stabilise the economy is needed and NPP is ready to come out with such plans of unleashing the growth potential, increasing government revenue, rebuilding foreign reserves and directing the economy for a sustainable growth.

However, he said the present government could have gone for early negotiations with creditors in advance and explored other options available and adopted by other countries if it had a genuine intention of recovering the economy.

He said the country is now halfway through the programme and therefore his party will not deviate from it as a pragmatic approach. Commenting more on the debts, he said the NPP would conduct an inquiry into certain credit agreements and how such borrowed funds were utilised.

Citizens are feeling the pinch because they are also to blame for voting for uneducated thugs and criminals to parliament. If we had 69% majority citizens who are honest, ethical and principled and factually practising true Buddhists, this country would be the heaven of the world. Unfortunately it is the reverse.

    Adwani Friday, 08 March 2024 08:39 AM

If you know the truth, you will never say that citizens have voted.

Priyanee Wijesekera Wednesday, 06 March 2024 08:25 AM

They change their policies .Earlier they said they will not repay the national debt. Now they talk of renegotiation. Ultimately they will realise that RW has infact done the best for the country.

Saman Perera Thursday, 07 March 2024 09:34 AM

Priyanne, RW has been doing his economy upliftment since 1980 still he could not make a strong economy. How we can trust his ability for another couple of years, Discussing and continuing IMF is one part. There are a lot more things to streamline in this country. A new team will be elected in the Presidential election and will do a better job than those who are still protecting and covering the thieve

    Wathsi Wednesday, 06 March 2024 08:28 AM

We thought only the politicos bombarded us with fairy tales! The so called educated professionals too are going in the same path! Does this prof has never heard the saying "beggers cant be choosers" when he says "we will renegotiate agreements with IMF? How pathetic!

    Jayantha Wednesday, 06 March 2024 08:31 AM

Lol. So no point in voting for these guys proved once again. Not much different to existing government and no any unique plan either. Bunch of jokers.

    UniDon Wednesday, 06 March 2024 08:36 AM

I am wondering if there is any difference between NPP, SJP, and UNP in terms of economic, education, and healthcare policies. It seems that NPP acts as a greedy middle-class man who got a chance to get married to a wealthy woman with a big dowry, ready to bow down to any conduction.

    Dee Wednesday, 06 March 2024 08:56 AM

What is being done is what you will have to do as well to prevent a total loss. Only difference is that the people will feel good because a new spoon is feeding them the same medicine! You change it and it will be worse that 2022. Any bets?

    Sam Wednesday, 06 March 2024 09:01 AM

Sorry I don't think you can renegotiate with IMF, every time All elected governments renegotiated look at what has happened to us. Better come up with your plans and policies what are the government owned organisations to be sold to private investors. Study what other countries have done in Asia. Sorry to say this some people in your party own lots of property overseas(90% of assets), these the same disgraceful people who doesn't like anything to be privatised. Some

    Joseph Wednesday, 06 March 2024 09:15 AM

So now they are even ready to work with IMF . Very soon there will not be any significant difference with their national program and that of the Government

    Chris Wednesday, 06 March 2024 09:38 AM

If the NPP is serious about actually running this government please publicly share your detailed plan of action for the next 6 years. You lot have a tendency of always realising very late what is right for the country and then embracing it. But before you lot realise it, you actually totally disrupt all good efforts and take the country backwards. Eg. Walls Ice Cream plant, SAITM and Private education. Sampur Power Plant, Provincial Councils (Pala Babas), IMF loans, Indian engagements. So if thanks to our stupid voters if you lot comes to power you will have to make a lto of mistakes learn from them and then correct them to the country to move forward. To avoid this please share your plan for the next 6 months ideally next 24 years. (we need stable policies across at least 4 general elections to get control of our debts properly)

    S.Balasingam Wednesday, 06 March 2024 09:45 AM

Where is the homegrown solution to stabilize the economy? It is easily said than done. NPP must place its solution for public consumption soon. All political parties state that they have nice solutions to lift the country from the disastrous status. But, no action, talk only.

    Khayyam Wednesday, 06 March 2024 09:51 AM

For once, a sensible statement from the NPP. Let's hope they come round to understanding economic reality and act responsibly if they come into power. We Sri Lankans once made a stupid decision of choosing an 'outsider' (Gota) who promised unorthodox, populist economic reforms and nearly drove the entire country to starvation. I sincerely hope the next administration does not make the same mistakes Gota made, and sticks to orthodox policies that have worked time and again in many plces around the world.

    Bandula Wednesday, 06 March 2024 09:55 AM

So you guys are seeking to deviate from the current IMF agreement and the chartered course. And if they don't dance to your time (which is the most likely outcome given your significant deviations in policy) then abrogate the agreement like what SLPP did which plunged the country into utter chaos?

    Banda Wednesday, 06 March 2024 10:13 AM

Dont warry. It will never win the election. If it does, Sun may rise from the west. Not from the East. We have analysed everything from the beginning.. They are here day dreamers. So it is not applicable.

Keep quiet Wednesday, 06 March 2024 10:19 AM

Possibility of you coming to power is zero, zilch, ශුන්ය.

Sathyapala Hangunuwa Wednesday, 06 March 2024 10:52 AM

Sri Lanka would have not faced this situation if the JVP/NPP did not go about blasting transformers,

    N.M. Perera Wednesday, 06 March 2024 11:05 AM

NPP has no Manifest/Policies or know-how. Only hope is SJB/UNP Coalition Government. RW as President..... SP/Prime Minister and SF as Defence Minister.

    Dan Wednesday, 06 March 2024 11:10 AM

Professor's comments are totally opposite to the comments by premier economic spokesman for JVP/JJB Handunneththi. He quite recently mentioned that they will refuse to honour the ISB bonds as they have already taken a risk and also they will accept IMF assistance only if IMF agrees to the NPP conditions. Who should we believe?

    Indika Wednesday, 06 March 2024 02:24 PM

He is merely parroting what they think the people want to hear, economic policy stability, although their actual stance is so very different and in fact opposed to the current painful, but necessary, path.

    Labby Wednesday, 06 March 2024 11:41 AM

Do they know what they're talking?

    Lanka Wednesday, 06 March 2024 12:01 PM

They will not make mistakes as Gota has done. The reality is we can not ignore the IMF and all other international and regional financial organizations. but we must be clever enough, sharp enough, and smart enough to talk to them. That is why we need some qualified people on the top and they must know how to negotiate how to discuss and how to come to terms with it. sometimes politically motivated moves can be detrimental to us. so, put the country first not politics. Ranil, Sajith, or MR may live for some more years but the next generations of Sri Lanka have to live. Do not destroy their future for your politics ...party politics is a curse to all of us.

Union Walin Aapu Rag Karapu Sinhala Weerayo Wednesday, 06 March 2024 12:23 PM

Pls go to an English class first

    johan Wednesday, 06 March 2024 01:53 PM

    What about Basil's english

    Sambo Wednesday, 06 March 2024 12:58 PM

The president is taking all these rash discissions for him to pass his time as he is uncertain of being reelected and after that he cannot be held responsible for the discissions he has taken. Therefore the public should not allow him to make discissions as and how he wants.

Morajee Sena Wednesday, 06 March 2024 01:06 PM

NPP is lacking experience to run a Government. If the Sri Lankan people select a person from NPP to run the country the people of SL will have to face the same consequences as the country under GOTA donkey. Loss making public enterprises should not control by the Government. Most of the countries are doing this in the world. Like we did to Telecom the government should find suitable buyers to run these entities.

    Kays N Wednesday, 06 March 2024 01:30 PM

JVP surely can get investors from their godfather North Korea? And rockets to fire towards India? Hope this profs Phd in whatever is not a honorary award from Russia! Can he tell us how his expertise has contributed to SL economic growth thus far?

    NiranjanA Wednesday, 06 March 2024 01:45 PM

Changing the promise is politics. How you guys can Re-negotiate. Did you think, we are fools to listen to your say.

    pussycunt Wednesday, 06 March 2024 06:37 PM

BASIL is here to divert part of the money to the personal bank accounts

Tissa Fernando Wednesday, 06 March 2024 08:29 PM

This is bullshit. Are you going to take another credit line from India my dear Bombay boys.

    Cheers Thursday, 07 March 2024 12:50 AM

So now what Gota is the only president who had a vision not to take IMF loans so we should now say aragalayata Jayawewa and than sapada and Anura and NPP should ho home or chase and beaten

Foot Note Thursday, 07 March 2024 04:41 AM

JVP cannot hide in an NPP mask. The political culture behind JVP is similar to Julampitiye... when considering their shutdown revolution in 87-89, now emerging with pandemics. JVP successfully played the role of Dutugamunu with Mahinda, now shifts and disguises as Parakumba!

    Jude Thursday, 07 March 2024 07:27 AM

Dear NPP, if you reduce the MP's to 100 and cabinet members to 18 then scrap the PC's and local government councils them The government gonna save annually OVER ONE TRILLION RUPEES, no need to borrow money from anyone, period.

    JR Thursday, 07 March 2024 09:00 AM

This is absolute rubbish. The JVP does not have a clue. It is only RW who can pull us out of this hole.

Points to ponder! Friday, 08 March 2024 07:55 AM

Read this simple example. Sometime back, we had young girls in full make up selling Kadju by the roadside in Bataliya. They profited. Some donkey created the Kadju Corporation resulting in loss of millions. Where has all the profit gone? Same with every State Owned Enterprise!

    Adwani Friday, 08 March 2024 08:50 AM

No Proper Planning Party says that they will not deviate from IMF already implemented programs, but NPP will rengotiate. To renegotiate means to deviate from the already implemented programs. So it is NPP. While Cubraal the magician said we will never go to IMF with bended knees that is SLPP Sri Lanka Patta Posath party. Still Sajith's Soostthi Jarawa Balaya not yet decided what to do with IMF.

I think the NPP are bullshitters with no concrete plan to revive the economy, using the revenge mentality of people to their advantage.
