If teachers are not available for marking Advanced Level (A/L) examination papers by next week, a decision will be taken to make education an essential service under emergency law, the President's Media Division said.

It said President Ranil Wickremesinghe has told Education Ministry officials that he will not allow the education of children to be held hostage by teachers.

The President has also said that a decision will be taken to initiate legal action against teachers who fail to fulfill their responsibilities.

President take some strong action on this matter... whatever problems they have they can't penalize students and what crime they have done to suffer and why should Teachers play with the lives of students...that is not acceptable at all .Let them know that ..Make it an essential services such as others essential services..They can ask for salary increase but they can't say no to marking work ...this is not a good way to deal with this matter

The way it goes all the public services will come under emergency services act. This brings nothing short of a rule of dictatorship. All services will come under ATA.

Eventually everything will become ESSENTIAL SERVICES Huh!! However, government missing the point, any service legislated essential service then those workers has to be paid extra, yeah more in terms of salary and wages!! Coz employees been restricted in regard to Labour actions such as NOT being allowed to STRIKE.

Is the President so stupid that he thinks he can make anyone a prisoner to work by calling anything he likes essential services. The teachers will have to protest by improperly marking if president holds gun to their heads saying they have to work for low pay by his rules, for the optional work they undertake.
