The western countries are bracing for voicing strong concern for the government regarding the latest version of the Anti-Terrorism Bill (ATB) and the Online Safety Bill - which they see as problematic after analysis of the contents with their legal experts yesterday, Daily Mirror learns.
The representatives of these countries held talks with the legal experts and conclude that the definition of terrorism in the ATB is extremely broad, ignoring international standards and norms. These countries find the bill with serious concerns.
Daily Mirror learns from a highly placed source that the new draft still leaves scope for abuses and arbitrary detention like in the case of the current Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
The repeal of the current PTA has been envisaged even in the latest UNHRC resolution adopted on Sri Lanka. European Union has also called for the repeal of it to be replaced by a new law that complies with international standards and norms as one of the requirements for Sri Lanka to qualify for GSP + trade facility in accessing the markets in the region of European Union.
The government introduced the ATB previously but revised following criticism by the western countries which urged the incorporation of views from civil society organizations. However, these countries are up in arms against the new version of the bill.
Earlier, U.S. Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, in her meeting with Foreign Minister Ali Sabry also inquired about the content of the new version of the ATB. The U.S. also notes the bill with concerns despite it being an improvement of the previous version. (Kelum Bandara)

Oppressive action by unlawful government must be stopped by way of UN imposing Economic Embargo, yeah! But the West not holding the Unelected Leader responsible, the Megalomaniac will continue the Hypocrisy!! Yeah.

All countries that value freedom and democracy should get together in defeating this heinous attempt by the pin president and his cohorts to suppress whatever is left of democracy in the country and the people, too, should agitate assertively against these measures. This regime and the goat's brought nothing but misery on the people.

1. “The only way to punish the government so forcing it to do the good things for citizens is by punishing it” 2. “The Government and it's lackey the Central Bank Governor cannot even raise enough revenue because they allow for so much tax avoidance in the private businesses” The International Community (IC)would not do (1) above, because the ‘Ordinary People of the country’ would be the biggest sufferers!!! More than Politicians and Elite, who would circumvent and not affected, because of the Power they wield in 3rd world countries!!! They may be accused of Inhumane action, by the likes of ‘Weerasangili and Udayapilla’!!!??? Non-Event!!! Under (2) above, “Raising Revenue”, is outside the ambit of CBSL Governor!! He has no Control!? Governor CBSL Nandalal, nothing to attribute, that issue NOR AID, IMPROVEMENT!?

The ATB bill if Western nations have any backbone cause complete repeal of the GSP for Sri Lanka. The only way to punish the government so forcing it to do the good things for citizens is by punishing it. The Government and it's lackey the Central Bank Govoneor cannot even raise enough revenue because they allow for so much tax avoidance in the private businesses. They won't need so much revenue if the Army was cut down to a useful size. And keeping the Army people in jobs is the whole point of this repressive and unnecessary Anti-Terrorism Bill (ATB) and the Online Safety Bill.

The International Community (IC)would not do to harm export earnings depriving GSP, because the ‘Ordinary People of the country’ would be the biggest sufferers, than Politicians and Elite, who would circumvent, not affected, because “Power they wield – 3rd developing countries!!! IC Fears, being accused – Inhumane action!!??? Non-Event!!! The issue rests with SL People, None else!!?? Let’s get our house in order!!!??? Correct Our Mistakes than, “Pointing the Finger”, at ‘DO-GOODERS’, and IC!!!??? We take it upon ourselves – educate (because Rural Masses – POOR and LESS EDUCATED)!!!? Let’s overcome that by every individual, more erudite, Knowledgeable, with “FONT of WISDOM”, to enable Rural Voters understand their “FOLLY”!!!??? Repeatedly re-electing useless, Rogues and Crooks to Parliament, PC’s and LG bodies!!!??? SIMPLE PROBLEM SOLVED in 6 months!?
BASL is for it, because BASL was against the Aragalaya Wednesday, 27 September 2023 09:40 AM
The biggest winners from this will be the lawyers. They will get much work, when innocent public get harmed by the bills and come to the lawyers for assistance. The BASL will financially benefit much from it, but lawyers money focused attitude like when they went against the Aragalaya will one day cause the utter downfall of the BASL.

Merely voicing concerns by Western Countries is not enough. When our autocratic President visit their countries, they must show their opposition and demand its total withdrawal.
Tissa Fernando Wednesday, 27 September 2023 11:18 PM
Western countries want terrorists to operate freely in other countries so that those countries continue to depend on the Western countries and also provide supply of trained man power to support their economies as most of their population is either old or addicted to drugs or engaged in criminal activities. If other counties are livable these western counties cannot survive.
