Vote called for President’s expenditure head

PARLIAMENT (Daily Mirror) - A vote was called for the President’s expenditure head by the National Peoples Power (NPP) today. The division was called by NPP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake creating a dramatic moment during the first day of the committee stage debate on the budget.

MP Dissanayake said his party decided to call for a division as their school of thought was that it was not proper for the House to allocate funds for former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa who have been held responsible for the country’s economic downturn by the Supreme Courts. “We feel that the House should not allocate funds for those who have been found guilty of destroying the economy,” he said.

Leader of the House Susil Premajayantha said the President’s expenditure head includes funds allocated for presidents and their wives. “It even allocates funds for the Opposition Leader’s mother who is the wife of late President Ranasinghe Premadasa,” Minister Premajayantha said.

However, the expenditure head was approved by a majority of 59 votes with 62 MPs voting for it and three against. All NPP members voted against while two SJB members Eran Wickramaratne and J. C. Alawathuwela left the chambers soon after the division was called.

Perhaps Anura Kumara will reconsider his position and demand regarding the Rajapaksas when he learns that Mahinda and Gota Rajapaksa and other members of the Rajapaksa clan who benefit from such budgetary allocations, in the spirit of the Buddha's teachings, have access to all budgetary resources allocated to them for the benefit of the Poor people, especially the malnourished and starving children of Sri Lanka, not only now but for their entire lifetime!!! From now on no one in Sri Lanka should claim that they have no compassion for the suffering of the people or that people like them cannot change!!! Furthermore, they said that they wanted to be a role model and example for other super rich people who want to improve their bad kamma through good deeds (kusala)!!! She hopes that Sri Lanka will remember her forever through these good deeds that will give her life a positive turn!!!

AKD had a very good point. His point is silently supported by over150 MPs who avoided the Chamber at the voting time. That is seen when only 62 were present at voting and of them 3 voted against.

I support AKD on this issue and go a step further. The pensions, big staff, official houses and security etc must be withdrawn. In England former PM was seen getting off the train carrying many bags. When some one offered to help him he declined. That must be the spirit when retired

Can this country afford to maintain past president. They are not beggars. In the future the budget will only be enough to maintain these past heads of state. As it is the prime ministers house sends Rs 2 million worth of rations every month to MR. These people are a waste to space.

It was like that from very beginning,I remember in 1970 s , from nationalized coconut lands around Beliatta, Walasmulla, a couple of tractor loads sent to Madamulana, than MR was only a MP, here Denesh should answer this dirty offer, we can remember,his another such offer as then minister in charge of cbk government, he offered 2 acres of land to CBK, later which was revoked due to public protest
