The government has decided to initiate a programme for the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level (O/L) and Advanced Level (A/L) students to provide an opportunity to complete a curriculum covering five basic areas related to vocational education, while still keeping them in the school system.
Addressing the media, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardana said the programme has been prepared to provide students who finish the Ordinary Level exams till they start the Advanced Level or students who finish the Advanced Level exams.
He said the programme is mainly expected to develop IT and English skills, which are generally important for vocational education, along with soft skills.
The Cabinet has approved a proposal presented by the Education Minister to implement the proposed programme as a pilot project.
Accordingly, the pilot programme will be implemented for a period of 3–4 months in 320 selected schools, covering every educational division of the island.
It has also been decided to implement this project as a national programme in 2024 based on the results of the pilot project. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
