As part of the regular reviews by the Committee of 18 independent international experts, the UN Human Rights Committee will hold its upcoming session from February 27 to March 24, to review Sri Lanka and five other countries.
“The six parties (Egypt, Turkmenistan, Zambia, Peru, Sri Lanka and Panama) are among the 173 members of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. They are required to undergo regular reviews by the Committee of 18 independent international experts on how they are implementing the Covenant as well as the Committee's previous recommendations,” the UN said.
It also said that the Human Rights Committee, which has received the respective country reports and other submissions from non-governmental organisations, will discuss a range of issues with the six delegations through public dialogues. The review on Sri Lanka will be held on March 8 and 9, it added.(Sunil Jayasiri)

UNHRC should take up the President's illegal action of blocking the elections saying there is no fund. The President is an interim President elected not by the people. If there is no fund after allocating in the budget, how can IMF accept the proposals agreed upon by the Govt?

The HR situation is going from worst to very serious and extremely unpleasant levels whilst UNHRC in Geneva has fallen asleep.

Hope UNHR committee will decide the violations committed by the government against peaceful demonstrators. IMF and GPS will uphold their duties to prevent human rights abuses committed by the Sri Lankan government

High time UNHCR took tangible action against SL for stifling democracy, not taking action against political rogues, persons who brought the country's economy to its knees, burdening the people with taxes, closing cases against politicians etc etc. All these are crimes against the people and ate violation of peoples rights. I just xant believe against these backdrop IMF is trying to give money to SL

It is high time for UNHCR to demonstrate it has an effective mechanism to deal with the HR violator Government, rather than asking report after report. How long this has been going on Sri Lanka case - and have we improved our HR records over the time? Then what is the purpose of having UNHCR?
