It is in Sri Lanka people and media seem to go back again and again to the meaningless Richter Scale. Please note this scale measures the magnitude of the earthquake at the origin of the quake. This may be 2km or 25km below the surface of earth. But its energy release at the surface will be different depending on the depth of the quake, Hence today we talk in terms of Moment Magnitude ie a measure of the release of energy on the surface of the planet.
