Two CMC workers die after falling into gully in Kotahena

Two employees from the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) died after falling into a gully when they were trying to connect a newly constructed sewerage line at Kotahena.

Police said two of the three persons who were repairing the pipeline met with the tragedy this afternoon.

Police said the investigation had revealed that one person initially fell into the gully and while trying to save him, the other person also fell into the gully.

They died upon admission at the Colombo National Hospital.

The deceased aged 28 and 38 were identified as residents of Colombo 10 and Colombo 14.

The Kotahena Police is conducting further investigations. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

These deaths are due to non availability of safety gear, CMC is responsible for not providing safety kits.

Will Colombo municipal council compensate them for their families...Human Rights groups must advise the government to do so ...they died in thier official duty and they must be paid some compensation..I feel really sorry for their families..these are our heroes...they dedicated their lives for us and people must pay their respect .. government if it is good one will their funerals on the expenses of CMC ...

There should be Risk Assessment for each task. Doe the municipality have a Safety section with qualified Safety Officers?
