COLOMBO (Daily Mirror)- The number of doctors and consultants leaving the country has moderately come down, said the newly appointed Secretary to the Ministry of Health Dr. Palitha Mahipala.

Addressing a news briefing at the Ministry on Thursday (23), Dr Mahipala said when considering the data for the last two to three weeks, there is a downward trend of doctors leaving the country.

“We have seen a trend some time back that those doctors who had gone abroad for postgraduate training never returned to the country. Comparatively, doctors are coming back now. In fact, some of the doctors who left the country for other purposes, are coming back,” he argued.

Furthermore, the health secretary said they are currently discussing the matter with trade unions and other stakeholders to see how best the issue can be ironed out adding that this has to be addressed holistically.

“Producing a specialist takes 8–10 years with so much of money spent on them. As such, we have to ensure that they remain in the country,” Dr Mahipala added.

Meanwhile, Director General of Health Services Dr Asela Gunawardena stated that the health ministry had directed the provincial health directors to provide all the details of the recipients of the controversial Immunoglobulin drug.

“We have not yet reported any kind of complications as yet due to the use of Immunoglobulin drug in question. However, the Medical Research Institute is conducting further investigation on the drug,” he clarified.

They get Free education then they migrate to make dollars And sterling pounds. These doctors should be under a Bond where they're compulsory to work in Sri Lanka for a period of 20 years. And allowed to go for foreign training. Once they completed 20 years can be employed overseas for not more than 5 years.

Is he trying to give the impression that the change came about with the appointment of the new Minister and Secretary? If so, change the entire government then the whole country will prosper better!

When you had 30,000 doctors in SL, it was 500 Per month who left, not you have 10000 and it has gone down to 100 per month. Rest you imagine why ....

It’s obvious. The standards in foreign countries are quite high. Thus doctors out of our universities don’t match those standards. The competition is high and our doctors unable to get jobs abroad. They have to come back.

At least talk to someone you know in a foreign country, for first hand evidence about the standards of proper Srilankan doctor and the good quality doctors you think from other nations.

The numbers are supposed to trickle down anyway. Probably there aren’t any more left to leave the country. Does the health secretary claim this change is due to his appointment?

Doctors of GMOA and Specialists that sought greener pastures , may have now realised the truth. The truth is the migrated countries, have personal income taxes levied and employ to be GP or Specialists not that easy. Good lesson to them.

Could be finding work would have caused problems. Some Western countries, they have their own rules before allowing outsiders to practice medicine. That is any applicant seeking working rights must sit for the exams conducted by the host country

It is not a great discovery by Dr.Mahipala.Needless to say doctors cannot for ever be leaving the country in the same numbers as at the beginning ? Soon it will come to zero?

    BuffaloaCitizen Friday, 24 November 2023 05:09 PM

How can it come down when most have left.

    Sambo Saturday, 25 November 2023 07:51 AM

Because by now most of them have left. we don't have a population of doctors.
