The driver and the conductor of the bus on which a tree fell at Duplication Road in Kollupitiya, have been given a week's duty leave, the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) said.

The decision was reportedly taken because the two are under stress, and the duty leave was given on the instructions of Disaster and Defence State Minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon.

Five people lost their lives and five others were injured yesterday when an old Roberosia tree fell on a SLTB bus at Kollupitiya. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

What a pity? Tree falling and people getting killed is happening on roads throughout in Sri Lanka. Nobody is taking is serious. Who is responsible for this? The institution that is responsible for this should bear the responsibility for this. They should check periodically whether such a danger is imminent with all big trees on the road side.

How about psychological counselling for post traumatic stress plus a months paid leave? Do you think that this driver and conductor will recover from the shock of this experience in a week?

Doubt the two will get over things in week. They would be traumatised along with the surviving passengers for sometime to come. However, getting back into the routine would be good. Even traveling on a bus maybe challenging for them after what happened. Sooner they start going on buses the sooner they can recover. Telling them to get back to full duties in week is nastily stingy. Making them just be passengers in SLTB busses for a week for five to six hours a day, should be good therapy for them.

Most unavailable accident, since vehicles on Duplication Road move at snail speed, due to traffic congestion, haphazard riding of motorcycles and Three-wheelers, more than a bus lane, a motorcycles and Three-wheeler lane is paramount important.

Both of them have undergone very severe stress. I think they deserve much more paid leave, and yes, psychological counselling, too.

Trees don't simply fall unless their main roots have been cut or damaged. When the authorities made the pavements and layed underground lines they cut through many of these roots. When new building are built in the area they cut through these roots too. That is invariably the cause. Otherwise a tsunami or cyclone couldn't uproot these trees.
