Colombo, April 22 (Daily Mirror) - The Meteorology Department has issued a weather advisory warning of thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning in several parts of the country later today.
According to the advisory, showers are likely to occur after 1.00 p.m. in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western, North-Central, Southern and Uva provinces, as well as in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts.
The department cautioned that temporary localized strong winds may accompany these thundershowers, posing potential risks to life and property.
The general public has been urged to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by lightning activity. Authorities advised individuals to seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking cover under trees.
People are also advised to stay away from open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and water bodies, and to refrain from using wired telephones and connected electrical appliances during periods of lightning.
In addition, the public is warned against using open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats during adverse weather conditions, and to remain cautious of fallen trees and power lines.
For emergencies, residents are encouraged to contact local disaster management authorities.
