Three hacked to death, one injured in Mawanella knife attack

Colombo, January 1 (Daily Mirror) - Three people were hacked to death and another woman was injured in a brutal attack carried out with a sharp weapon in the Kondeniya in Mawanella this evening, police said.

Investigations have been launched by the Mawanella Police following the incident, in which three women and a man were attacked and admitted to the Mawanella Hospital. Two women and one man later succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment.

The deceased, aged 52, 57 and 66, were residents of Kondeniya, Mawanella. A 35-year-old woman who was injured in the attack is currently undergoing treatment at the Mawanella Hospital.

A 33-year-old suspect, a resident of Kondeniya, has been arrested in connection with the incident. Initial investigations have revealed that the attacks were carried out at three separate houses in the area and that the suspect is believed to be mentally ill.

The bodies of the deceased have been placed at the Mawanella Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations, while further investigations are being carried out by the Mawanella Police.
