TID launches probe into prison inmate’s tip on bomb threat

The Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) has initiated an investigation based on information provided by a prison inmate regarding a bomb threat.

Police said a detainee aboard a bus transporting inmates from Pallekele Dumbara prison to Mahara prison left a handwritten letter for the officers on duty at the Thennakumbura Police Road Block, in which he claimed knowledge of a potential terrorist attack.

In the note, the inmate mentioned that another prisoner had discussed plans for such an attack.

While initially assessing the credibility of this information alongside intelligence data, police have determined that it lacks substantial validity.

Nevertheless, the Director of the Terrorism Investigation Division has taken the initiative to obtain a court order for recording statements from inmates within the prison, police said.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

By the time court order is obtained and statements are recorded the bomb will be gone. First take necessary precautions island wide and expedite the investigation

It's quite surprising to see a report like this leak to the press. While obtaining a court order is the correct procedure, given the sensitive nature of the matter, it might have been wiser to handle it behind closed doors. Until the situation is fully resolved, such reports should be kept confidential. This raises questions about the police leadership; perhaps additional training is needed in handling such delicate situations.
