WBBL side Sydney Thunder recently came forward to announce the signing of Sri Lanka women’s skipper Chamari Athapaththu ahead of the WBBL 2023–24 season. Notably, Athapaththu was recently snubbed from the overseas draft of the same tournament.
However, her inclusion comes as she was named as an overseas replacement player for Thunder. The 33-year-old has quite the experience when it comes to competing in the WBBL. The Sri Lanka skipper has competed for Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades and was even one of the retention options for Renegades. However, they selected Hayley Matthews and Harmanpreet Kaur as the retentions.
As part of the Thunder lineup, Athapaththu will be part of a heavily experienced lineup that will consist of the likes of Marizanne Kapp, Heather Knight, and Lauren Bell. Knight will be the captain of the side, and the side will kick off their campaign by taking on Sydney Sixers at the North Sydney Oval on October 22.
I appreciate all of the support: Athapaththu
After the announcement of her signing, Athapaththu took center stage and talked about how she has performed in Australia over the years, highlighted her record in the country, and thanked the fans for all the support that they have shown her so far.
"Australia is where I’ve scored most of my international T20 runs away from home, including a century at North Sydney Oval, I appreciate all of the support so far and look forward to being in front of the fans, I plan to bring a Thunder-storm to the WBBL this summer,” Athapaththu was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au
It is worth noting that Athapaththu has been in outstanding form for Sri Lanka in 2023. Being one of their best batters, the skipper will look to continue her form in the upcoming season of the WBBL as well. Her inclusion in Thunder’s lineup also adds flexibility to the side as she would be a left-handed option.

Hi Chamari You are a great player no doubt it. But you have some sort of weekness where you throw away your wicket thereby Sri Lanka lost a few closely contested matches. So careful of your shot selections.

Not many Sri Lankan men or women cricketers are involved in Australia's Big Bash League while there are many overseas cricketers who represent the eight teams in the competition. I am sure pocket rocket Kusal Mendis could easily walk into any side in the BBL.

cricket fan: but Chamari does and Kusal does not.
