Suspect shot dead during hidden weapon recovery in Katunayake

A 30-year suspect who was arrested by the Katunayake Police over organized crimes was shot dead when he attempted to hurl a hand grenade at the policemen while he was being taken to recover weapons at Maduwa in Ellopitiya yesterday.

Police said the suspect, a resident of Minuwangoda was arrested on Wednesday at Weligama in Matara.

He was wanted over a number of crimes including extortion, operating as a close associate of a criminal gang member.

He allegedly attempted to shoot a businessman  Averiwatta last year. Also, he wanted over an attempted shooting of another businessman in Averiwatta in January this year.

The suspect was taken to recover hidden a live grenade and a firearm in a swamp in Katunayake Maduwa area following the revelation during the investigations.

At that time, police said suspect was injured after a policeman opened fired at him as he tried to explode a hand grenade.

The suspect was injured and the hand grenade thrown by the suspect fell on the ground but did not explode, police said.

The injured suspect died after being admitted to the Negombo Hospital.

Police said an automatic pistol, a magazine and two rounds of live ammunition were found at the scene of crime.
