Colombo, Feb. 25 (Daily Mirror) - Former State Intelligence Services (SIS) Chief, Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay who was arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act, is to be detained for 72 hours for questioning, police said.
Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in charge of the Western Province, Sajeewa Medawatte said that the arrest was made based on evidence uncovered in relation to the 2019 Easter Sunday bomb attacks.
He made these remarks during a special media briefing held at the Police Media Division.
Senior DIG Medawatte said that a lengthy investigation is required and therefore, detailed information cannot be disclosed at this stage.
Responding to criticism over the arrest without immediate disclosure of details, he said that if the arrest had not been made, there would have been criticism against the police for failing to act.
He further said that information regarding the alleged mastermind of the Easter Sunday bomb attacks could emerge during the ongoing interrogations of the retired Major General.
Meanwhile, DIG Jaliya Senaratne, who also addressed the media, explained that under the PTA, a suspect can be detained for up to three days upon arrest. He said that based on evidence, police may seek a detention order as provided for under the law.
