Station masters to stay away from issuing tickets from 6.00 pm today

The station masters on duty at all railway stations have decided to refrain from issuing tickets from 6pm today to oppose charging unfair ticket fares from commuters during the current economic crisis in the country and the failure to implement proper methodology to increase the fares, The Sri Lanka Railways Station Masters' Union (SLRSMU) said.

They said that they do not approve the loss the railway department suffers because of the commuters at this time, however they have no objection to increasing the ticket fare to some extent in line with the price of fuel.

We have pointed out to the management that problems would arise due to the increase in the tickets fares in the normal economy class (3) over the price of reserved seat tickets in economy class (3) between certain stations.

Moreover, the season ticket fare will also increase significantly compared to the regular ticket fee.

If the passengers are not informed about the railway fare revision within a certain period of time, problems are likely to arise between the station masters and the passengers.

Also, the administration has not been able to provide alternative solutions, as the stock of regular printed tickets is running out quickly at many railway stations.

The Railway Department has stated that in a statement that the fare revision will be done by 60%, which is incorrect and it has misled the commuters.

As per the new revision, the previous fare of Rs.15 has been increased by 125%, which is Rs.40.

The ticket fares between certain train stations have been increased by 350% by the administration. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
