KATUNAYAKE (Daily Mirror) - SriLankan Airlines said today that they have advanced their passenger services at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) with the introduction of self-service check-in and self-bag-drop services.

This initiative is set to redefine the travel experience, placing convenience and efficiency at the forefront.

The new self-service kiosks aim to minimize waiting times during peak periods, allowing passengers to seamlessly navigate through the check-in process and swiftly proceed to emigration. Frequent travellers, in particular, will appreciate the streamlined check-in procedure facilitated by the user-friendly self-service kiosks with self-bag drop located in the departure terminal of the BIA.

Passengers can now independently complete the entire check-in process, including flight check-in, seat selection and the printing of boarding passes and bag tags.

Following this, they can effortlessly drop off their luggage at the self-bag-drop facility, proceeding directly to the boarding gates after emigration clearance.

Deepal Pallegangoda, Senior Manager Airport & Ground Handling said SriLankan Airlines handles over 550,000 passengers and their luggage monthly as the official ground handler for all airlines operating out of BIA.

The introduction of these self-service facilities not only sets a new standard for airport convenience but also enables to manage the check-in process more efficiently to meet the demands of the growing passenger numbers, he said.

This venture is in alignment with SriLankan Airlines' broader digitalization strategy, supporting the IATA Fast Travel initiative to enhance the overall travel experience. With this implementation, SriLankan Airlines assumes the position of a regional pioneer in adopting self-service technologies for international travel.

Chamara Perera, Group Head of Information Technology of SriLankan Airlines stated, "We are ecstatic to equip our airline’s hub with the best-in-class self-service technology, elevating passengers’ pre-flight experience to another level.

"This initiative not only allows travellers flying out of BIA to bypass queues at the check-in counters entirely but also marks a significant step forward in Sri Lanka’s roadmap to digitally transform the country’s airports," Chamara Perera, Group Head of Information Technology of SriLankan Airlines said.

Richard Nuttall, Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines and Major General (Retired) G.A. Chandrasiri, Chairman of Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited participated in the launching event at the departure terminal of the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Congratulations sri lanka now we are inline with international standards with this. This will help the passengers do their own stuff as the sri lankan ground handling staff at the check in counters are half a sleep, very lethargic and supervisors walking up and down with no clue

Next should be Baggage drop and check-in malls. Similar to Air Arabia in Sharjah.

Russian travel writers do not recomend Sri Lanka now... No street lights, roads are flooded, living cost is too high, rents are high, Other East Asian destinations provide more for this money, whe they should bother here with us... Next year we need to suffer more... Scorched earth living cost.. without proper economic far sighteedness.

Numbers seem fudgy, 550,000 a month means over 6.5 million a year. According to SL Tourism only one million tourists so over 5 million Sri Lankans are travelling internationally in a year.

    Worst airline ever.

Finally instead of going through baggage drop-in lazy gang, they act as if they own the airport, not a single cctv monitoring them so they can run their typical government style lazy chit chat routine at baggage drop-off, one of the most in efficient process in Sri Lanka

Some time ago there was a train ticket counter at the arrival hall. When I requested for a ticket to Colombo the clerk thought it was a joke. Problem with this country is we go back to square one in 2 weeks. Good luck anyways.
