Sri Lanka welcomes first Shell fuel station

Colombo, Feb 26 (Daily Mirror) - The first Shell-branded fuel station in Sri Lanka has officially opened at B.S. Cooray Filling Station in Ambathale, marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy sector.

The launch follows a retail brand license agreement signed between Shell Brands International AG and RM Parks (Private) Limited, along with a product supply agreement signed in March 2024.

RM Parks (Private) Limited is a partnership between Tristar Group, a global energy logistics company, and RM Parks Inc., a leading distributor of Shell fuels in North America. Under the agreement, the company will rebrand a network of 150 fuel stations across Sri Lanka to Shell, following a contract awarded by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Petroleum and Energy for an initial 20-year period in 2023.

Speaking at the launch, Eugene Mayne, Group CEO of Tristar, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership: “This collaboration brings together RM Parks’ extensive experience in fuel distribution and Tristar’s logistics expertise to enhance Sri Lanka’s fuel retail landscape. Our goal is to introduce global best practices, superior service standards, and innovative energy solutions to benefit Sri Lankan consumers.”

Jason Callison, President of RM Parks Inc., echoed similar sentiments, stating, “For over a century, Shell has been a name synonymous with excellence and trust in the global energy sector. We are excited to bring this legacy to Sri Lanka and contribute to the country’s growth and development. We thank the Sri Lankan people for this opportunity and are committed to being the best stewards for the nation’s fuel industry.”

U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, also attended the opening and highlighted the significance of the initiative. “The launch of Shell-branded stations is a major milestone, providing reliable fuel distribution options to a country that has faced supply challenges. With RM Parks Inc. leading distribution, this partnership demonstrates how American businesses can help address global energy needs while creating jobs and promoting economic stability in Sri Lanka,” she said.

Flavia Ribeiro Pessanha, GM Licensed Markets at Shell Mobility, affirmed the company’s long-term commitment: “This is the first of many Shell stations set to open across Sri Lanka. We look forward to seeing the Shell brand expand nationwide, offering quality fuels and a premium retail experience to customers.”
