Colombo, Jan 20 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka remains open to play a positive role in dousing tension between India and the Maldives in the greater interest of regional peace, Daily Mirror learns.
First, tension between India and the Maldives flared up since the election of the new Maldivian president Mohamed Muizzu who openly advocates a pro-china policy and even called for Indian troops to leave his country for a foreign policy with better ties with China.
Later, on January 4, social media posts from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praising the beauty of India’s beaches in Lakshadweep sparked a diplomatic row with the Maldives, a country that counts on tourism as its main source of income.
Following the social media posts, three Maldivian junior ministers criticized the Indian Prime Minister, which led to calls from Indian social media users to boycott the Maldives as a tourist destination.
Sri Lankan Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry who met with his Maldivian counterpart Moosa Zameer on the sidelines of the NAM Summit in Uganda is reported to have stressed the need for regional peace and stability for the benefit of all countries.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to hold bilateral discussions with Indian External Affairs Minister DR.S. Jaishankar in Uganda today. In addition to bilateral matters, the tension between India- Maldives is likely to be discussed.

Tell Ranil to focus on the issues we have in the country without trying to give aide to African nations and build hospitals in Gaza. Now he is trying to mediate tensions between two countries when Sri Lanka has so many tensions that exists within its own communities to resolve. There are mothers looking for their children in the north and mother’s looking for food to feed their families in the south. Helping other nations in need, is good when we can afford it. This president is a product of the Aragalaya and is overstepping his mandate and losing his focus on the core issues of the average man on the street.

There are hundreds if not thousands of Sri Lankans earning a living in the Maldives. Sri Lanka also supplies fruits, vegetables and water to the Maldives. They also bring in a lot of revenue for medical services and schools. What would happen if Maldives looses its position as a tourist destination? Resolving the tensions is important to us too.

All what Maldives asking India to do is to remove its Army stationed in Maldivian soil. But India is refusing to remove its troops. Similar thing happened here in our country, In 1990 when President Premadasa, the only Sri Lankan Politician who publicly acknowledged that Indian Army committed horrendous atrocities against the Tamils, demanded that India remove its Army from the North and East, Rajiv Gandhi refused and reinforced Palaly Air base with Indian Bombers. But it was the sudden change of government in India that resulted in Indian Army leaving Sri Lanka otherwise it wouldn’t have left Sri Lanka and probably it would have also moved to the South and taken over Sinhalese areas close to the North.

Why are our government getting involved in the Maldives India problem. India is a big bully, they try to force their business interests on us, when there are better China deals. The India Credit Loan is the highest interest loan there is. We should be supportive of all countries which want to free themselves of Indian control, even when we can't.

NEXT STEP TO COME IS SHIPS SURVEYING THE DEEP OCEAN AS SRI LANKA GOT WISE AND HALTED THE LAST EXPECTED ARRIVAL OF A VESSEL. NOW WITH CHINA HAVING GOT ROUND SOLOMON ISLAND, NARAU NOW MALDIVES AND THEY HAVE THE PORT IN HAMBANTOTA!!! SO SRI LANKA HAS A CHOICE GO HAND IN HAND WITH A COUNTRY RULED BY A DICTATOR WHO WANTS TO TAKE OVER INDEPENDENT TAIWAN BY FORCE OR INDIA, NOT FORGETTING OTHER PARTS OF LAND THEY CONTINUE TO CLAIM.
