Sri Lanka looks to introduce skydiving for tourism

Colombo, Feb 6 (Daily Mirror) - A meeting to study the feasibility of introducing skydiving activities in Sri Lanka was held at the Ministry of Defence yesterday by Defence Secretary Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) and a group of representatives of Skydive Sri Lanka.

During the meeting, representatives of Skydive Sri Lanka made a detailed presentation introducing skydiving, highlighting its potential benefits as an adventure tourism activity, along with proposed operational aspects. The discussion focused on the prospects of developing skydiving in Sri Lanka as a new tourism attraction and its contribution to the country’s tourism sector.

The Defence Secretary emphasised the importance of identifying possible bottlenecks and challenges related to promoting skydiving activities in the country.

He instructed officials to closely examine regulatory, safety, operational and other related issues, and to assess the overall feasibility of introducing skydiving in Sri Lanka.

He further directed that the findings be reviewed and taken up for further discussions in due course.

Senior officials of the Civil Aviation Authority, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, and representatives of Skydive Sri Lanka were present at the discussion.

First and foremost, a cable car project in the hill country is long overdue and should be treated as a priority. Recently, one company withdrew from such a project, citing red tape and delays in decision-making. This highlights the urgent need to streamline approvals and remove unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles. The Ministry of Tourism and Travel should actively introduce and promote new attractions such as cable car systems and gaming centres to draw more tourists, extend their stays, and increase overall tourism revenue.

That reminds me of an incident sometime back, some parachuters landed at wrong place getting injured. Go to Queenstown in NZ if want to adventure such, professionals. No thanks in SL

Absolutely! This should be a number one priority by the relevant ministries, and immigration should be deporting illegal immigrants without any concessions! These foreign businesses are operating in such significant numbers which is why the number of tourist arrivals never equates to the revenue earned by Sri Lankans/ in Sri Lanka. Instead, payments are made via card to foreign accounts. Why is the ministry of tourism not regulating this and carrying out thorough investigations?

Better to focus on less risky ventures. Any accidents or fatalities will result in hefty payouts. It is not worth it. Moreover, we have so much to offer which are uniquely Sri Lankan that we don’t have to resort to gimmicks!
