The Sri Lankan government has granted permission for the Chinese research ship ‘Shi Yan 6’ to dock in Sri Lanka amidst Indian concern.
Media Director of the Ministry of Defense Colonel Nalin Herath said that the permission of the Ministry of Defense has been given for the ship in question based on a request made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency NARA.
He said the NARA is scheduled to conduct a research with the related Chinese research ship, and the date of the ship’s arrival in Sri Lanka has not yet been informed.
It is reported that the Chinese research ship will call at the Colombo Port in October.
Earlier, the China’s state broadcaster, CGTN, called the Shi Yan 6, is a scientific research vessel crewed by 60 that carries out oceanography, marine ecology, and marine geology tests.
Last year, India had raised its concerns over a Sri Lankan port call in Hambantota by Chinese research vessel titled Yuan Wang 5, which specializes in spacecraft tracking and which New Delhi described as a spy vessel. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

China our All Weather friend Monday, 28 August 2023 07:59 AM
Excellent news and way to go. SL should open all it's ports to all countries, that way we follow a policy of "freedom of navigation in Asia" a policy repeatedly enounced by the USA, Aus, Japan

If you own part of the country it doesn't hurt to dock a ship!! And it's Notta bigger deal, yeah.

No backbone in decision making- all due to debt traps and who was to blame? In Chinese term Research = Spy and long term plan to steal resources through hidden agreements

Mahesh, looks like you are the only one that has commented up to now with BRAINS and aware of what is happening around the world, the others above can't seem to think beyond their noses. Sri Lanka has far more issues to resolve, start the process of putting those responsible before a court of law etc etc, than worrying about marine ecology and geology.

China holds one ball of Sri Lanka. Squeeze it and get what needs to be approved.

Our so called leaders have taken a stupid decision in dumping friend in close proximity to court an untrustworthy one thousands of miles away.

Our politicians have made Sri Lanka slaves to India

Whilst Sri Lanka has to maintain cordial relations both with India and China it is necessary to address the concerns of India. Have we a foolproof understading of the intentions of why certain sophisticated ships are eager to obtain clearance to dock in Sri Lanka and whether there is a material benefit for the country professionals in obtaining an exposure in the latest innovative initiatives in the maritime field. Unless we can answer these questions in the affirmative being a neutral country we need to maintain this status quo.

@Ding ding- what action are you expecting to be dished out to our country, by whoever? Please enlighten us. While on the topic, I'd say, well done, Sri Lanka, we will decide whether we grant approval or not, not be guided by some bully in the neighborhood.

Well done GOSL to taking the correct decision. We are sovereign country and we do what is best for our country and not to make any other country happy.

We received 4 Billion help from India during the difficult times and not from China. Antagonising our big brother who helped us is poor decision

This move is very dangerous, even a small child knows about it, but our rulers of this nation take everything very simple like a small child.

If Sajith would have faced such a situation, without any hassle he would have solved it with mutual understanding. This is the difference between Hitler Ranil and Peace Maker Sajith.
