Residents of Colombo, its suburbs and other major towns are already suffering from the effect of urban heat islands caused by the haphazard construction of skyscrapers and tall apartment blocks adjoining houses. Inter-lock cement block paving is another factor. Installing air conditioners only aggravates the issue as they emit warm air. The architects, engineers and urban planners need to join forces and find viable solutions before all of us incinerate in the near future!
