PARLIAMENT (Daily Mirror)- Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana said he will write to President Ranil Wickremesinghe to explain the remarks that have been made by the latter on the Constitutional Council (CC).
The Speaker said he would do it in his capacity as the Chairman of the CC.
He came out with these remarks in response to a request by Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa who questioned the remarks by the President on Thursday.
The President on Thursday called for the appointment of a select committee to probe the delays by the CC.
“I will write to the President and explain to him the position of the CC on the issues raised by him,” the Speaker said.
Also, the Speaker assured that matters pertaining to the approval of the IGP and the members of the Bribery Commission will be done within two weeks.
“One cannot blame the CC for the error made on the 21st amendment. He was referring to an error in the 21st Amendment where the Constitutional Council has been referred to as the Constitutional Board. The Speaker noted that this error caused the delay in appointing members to the Bribery Commission.
"You cannot blame anyone for this error," he said.
