Colombo, March 8 (Daily Mirror) - Small oil patches that were reported on seas off Hikkaduwa and Dodanduwa have been inspected by the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), its Chairman Samantha Gunasekara said.
Gunasekara told the media that the oil patches observed were very small in size and are believed to be lubricating oil.
He further noted that four oil barrels had washed ashore along the coastline, and the oil seen in the sea may have spread from these barrels. Oil samples collected from the affected areas have been sent to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation for further analysis.
Gunasekara said it is not yet possible to determine which vessel the barrels had originated from, adding that one of the barrels discovered today was severely damaged.
