Slain lawyer’s batch mates not satisfied with probe into killing

Colombo, Feb. 16 (Daily Mirror) - Batch mates of slain lawyer Buddhika Mallawarachchi said today that the progress of the probe into his killing is far from satisfactory.

The batch mates who are members of Young Lawyers’ for Democracy said the four persons who have been arrested so far are not the prime suspects.

“One person who has been arrested is one who has supplied the gun to the killer. Another has been a supplier of narcotic drugs. One wonders as to why the police have been inactive till the actual killer had got away,” Attorney-at-Law Sumudu Kekulandala told a media briefing.

“The incident had taken place three days ago and we wonder what the law enforcement officers are up to,” he added.

Also, it is alleged that there is a sinister move to create unrest among various professionals in the country, including lawyers and doctors.

“This is being done for political survival by the ruling party,” Kekulandala said.

He said the finger has to be pointed at the National Peoples’ Power (NPP) for the slow pace of the probe as it is this party which is running the government at the moment.

Attorney-at-Law Yohan Ariyawansa said the real danger behind the spate of killings during recent times is the breakdown of democracy and the rule of law.

“We are concerned about this situation. We will keep on fighting for justice for our slain friend,” he added.

No doubt justice should be meted out to the victims. If the perpetrators were identified, police will arrest them soon, but punishing perpetrators is not going to relieve the victim's families of the loss and sorrow. The nation is with the victims. No one wants these killings to recur again. This is a national crisis. All parties should come up with a viable solution to arrest the spate of killings recurring. My prophecy is that the government's drive to eradicate drug menace has disturbed the under world , triggering gang wars among them, which the previous governments pushed under the carpet, resulting in drug businesses thriving in the country, ruining the entire society.

These lawyers must understand that the underworld was controlled by politicians in the past. After NPP assumed office the politicians washed their hand and let loose the underworld thugs and the infighting began. The lawyers do not practice professional ethic and many lawyers are unlikely to know the meaning of the word ethics. It is alleged that the deceased lawyer represented the group A first and later represented group B. So naturally the group A could suspect that the secrets the lawyer knew about them or their business can be used or damaged when the lawyer represents their opponents

Everyone knows that the in capability of the police. Always all talk and no action. Look at the quality of the top most senior officers. They don’t have any quality. None of them even have any personality. They even can’t converse in English properly. Look at their uniforms. They are unable to dress in a way that reflects a dignified job. Such cheap people have been recruited to the police. Listen to them speak their own native language. There is no quality even when speaking their own native language. What more can you expect? Starting right from the top, we see no quality at all in the police department now unlike those days. It is very unfortunate.
