Six Gampaha police officers interdicted over alleged assault on priest

Colombo, Jan 27 (Daily Mirror) - Six police officers attached to the Gampaha Police Divisional Crime Detective Bureau (DCDB), who were arrested and remanded for allegedly assaulting a Catholic priest, have been interdicted.

The six officers were taken into custody and remanded after being produced before the court in connection with the incident.

According to police, the incident occurred on Saturday night when the officers ordered a motorcyclist travelling along the Kirindiwita–Udugampola Road to stop. The rider allegedly failed to comply, so the officers pursued and arrested him.

The motorcyclist, a 33-year-old Catholic priest, later admitted himself to the Negombo Hospital, claiming that he had been assaulted by the police officers.
