‘Silicon City’ industrial park planned in Nattandiya

Colombo, July 8 (Daily Mirror) - The Government is planning to establish a modern silicon-based industrial park named “Silicone City” in the Nattandiya area, utilising the silica sand deposits found in the Nattandiya Mahawewa–Horakelle Wattha farm belonging to the National Livestock Development Board (NLDB).

A special discussion was held yesterday (7) at the Ministry of Agriculture regarding the proposed industrial park, with officials focusing on developing silicon-based industries by using locally available silica sand resources and high-quality vein quartz found in other parts of the country.

During the meeting, Agriculture Ministry officials decided to obtain an urgent assessment from the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) on the exact capacity of the silica sand deposit to determine its potential for industrial use.

A special committee comprising representatives from relevant government institutions will also be appointed to identify suitable industries, attract local and foreign investment, and ensure the protection of the environment and natural resources while developing the project.

The initiative is expected to promote advanced technology-based industries, create employment opportunities in the Puttalam District, and contribute towards sustainable industrial development.

Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody, Chairman of the Puttalam District Coordinating Committee MP Gayan Janaka, Secretary to the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Thilaka Jayasundara, Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation D.P. Wickramasinghe, Puttalam District Secretary Indika Silva, and other government officials participated in the discussion.
