Sajith proposes National Reconciliation Council headed by President

Colombo, February 14 (Daily Mirror) - Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa proposed the establishment of a National Reconciliation Council headed by the President.

Premadasa made this proposal during a meeting with senior prelate Venerable Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera at the Abayarama Temple in Narahempita. He proposed that the National Reconciliation Council be headed by the President, with senior Buddhist monks playing a leading role. He also said that other religious leaders should be included.

“It should also be possible to include political party leaders as well,” Premadasa said during the meeting.

“Reconciliation among religious and ethnic groups is important. The peaceful coexistence of all religious and ethnic groups is important. A government is bound by the Constitution to safeguard Buddhism and to allow those who believe in other faiths to engage in their religious activities in a peaceful manner,” he told the Venerable Thera.

“Inform the President to set up a National Reconciliation Council if he calls on you,” the Opposition Leader requested during the meeting.

Both the Opposition Leader and the Venerable Thera discussed the insulting of Buddhist monks by members of the government during the recent past.

“The Chief Incumbent of Mihintale Rajamaha Vihara was insulted by a Minister recently. This kind of statement is prohibited under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and it is possible to take action against those who make defamatory statements under this convention,” Sajith Premadasa said.
