SLTB to increase fines for ticketless travel: Chairman

The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has decided to increase the fines for travelling on SLTB buses without tickets, after amending the SLTB Act.

SLTB Chairman S.M.D.L.K.D. Alwis told the Daily Mirror that the current fine for travelling without a ticket is Rs. 250 and double the fare.

Due to people travelling on buses without tickets, the SLTB incurs a loss of Rs. 70 million per month. Following investigations conducted over the incident, the SLTB has decided to increase the fines for ticketless passengers. It is also said that punishing the conductor is not enough to stop these activities.

Investigations revealed that some passengers travel without tickets with the support of the conductors due to various connections.

Therefore, the SLTB has decided to increase the fines, which will be defined after the legal draft is finalized, Alwis said. (Chatuanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
