Kanaka Herath

Technology State Minister Kanaka Herath yesterday said that they are working on the introduction of a digital economy policy for Sri Lanka, which does not change when the governments change.
He emphasised that the groundwork for this initiative would begin in the upcoming year, with the allocated provisions outlined in the 2024 budget.
Herath made these remarks during a press conference conducted yesterday at the Presidential Media Centre, under the theme ‘Collective Path to a Stable Country’.
He said over Rs.2 billion has been allocated in this year’s budget for digitisation and artificial intelligence (AI), with the aim of allowing the Sri Lankan people to experience the benefits of the ICT revolution by 2025.
He further said until President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s presidency, terms like digitisation and AI were infrequently used in the country.
He credited the president’s foresight for recognising the potential of digitisation and AI in building the economy, noting that these methods have stabilised economies worldwide.
To propel the country forward in line with the developing world, he stressed the need to provide more opportunities for digitalisation and AI, aiming to increase the digital economy’s contribution from 3 percent to 20 percent.
He also highlighted plans to organise an international investment workshop next year, aimed at promoting the digital economy in Sri Lanka.

just create a database of all citizens (the Registrar department already has information with the NIC number) and enable all police stations to have access when people's locations they can easily update online with an OTP to their mobile, and this is very basic info or people spend time in going behind grama seva ka - even school kids can help you in this project - Andaman ( underdeveloped island) has this infrastructure

IT keeps evolving within a few years Tuesday, 19 December 2023 11:28 AM

Everyone is aware, IT keeps on evolving over the years (Example mobile phones 4G to 5G). Need to update accordingly to the new technology available every few years

Start with the end in mind. Tuesday, 19 December 2023 05:54 PM

Please look at having the High Level policies, getting sub divided into the 20 to 30 ministries, to start investing in IT teams, know how, process re engineering, workflow and document management automation etc and under each ministries give them KPIs to further articulate into definable projects. otherwise at the speed its progressing it will take 4 years for the UID to complete, and if the ministries wait to thereafter only start projects it will take a further 4 years. totally 4 4 about 8 years to be fully digital. Country will not survive for so long.

Do not re-invent the wheel Tuesday, 19 December 2023 06:00 PM

Study Singapore. They have Three key strategies 1) Harnessing technology to enable efficient and user-centric public service delivery, 2) Digital Economy focuses on guiding businesses and the workforce to leverage technology, and 3) Digital Society aims to empower citizens by increasing access to services, promoting inclusion.
