Colombo, March 12 (Daily Mirror)- Whilst revealing that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will meet IMF officials next week, Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa today said his party will request for IMF assistance for a nutrition package for women and school children.

Premadasa who was speaking during a ceremony held at Malwana MV in Dompe said his party would focus on seeking assistance from IMF to get rid of malnutrition of Sri Lankan women and children.

“A census conducted in the year 2022 has revealed that around 25 percent of Sri Lankan school children are under weight. Also it has been found out that Sri Lankan women do not get sufficient food. This is why we are going to seek a nutrition package from the IMF next week,” Mr. Premadasa said.

“We will also inform IMF to team up with other international financial agencies such as World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB) to introduce an assistance package to provide free midday meals for school children,” he added.

He said school children in Sri Lanka are engaged in night time jobs because of their poverty.

“Closure of schools results in opening of 1000 prisons and this is why it is essential to ensure a sound education system in the country,” he also said.

Make sure the greedy politicians do not steal that too

Sajith will be a good negotiator if he manages to get the supply as aid

    Ruwan Wednesday, 13 March 2024 09:23 AM

The IMF are not dealing with internal affairs of any country. Countries have to find ways and means and programs to find solutions for their own problems. Just shows what sort of joker Sajith is.

If school children can work in night jobs it is good and shows availability of paid work. In Australia I hear that teenagers work to get pocket money and they still study to get good results.

16 years age group, eligible for driver’s license too! They start saving money for Higher Education HECS (NOW HELP) Scheme, being still under the care of the Parents!!???

FREE mid day meal only for schools where children need.. NOT to schools where affluent parents children study ...

Begging for everything after being in politics during his lifetime. I will not be surprised if the IMF refuses to visit Sri Lanka just to get away from beggers.

If this leaders can get out of mindset that leads to get enough income to feed theirself and families. Unfortunately these leaders always look for sources to beg and issue those as subsidies.. Need to change this now

Identify individual who possess wealth earned above their means confiscate them money found, will the present government or future government will do it answer is no why because most members of parliament are those people. Keeping honey in hand you don't have to beg IMF or any other international organizations shameful. Learn from India how to govern some of the Laws are ruthless no escape for culprits , make the government's organisations 100% independent free from interference by members of parliament you do all this a better prosperous Lanka can be built in no time.

Joker. The IMF does not provide that type of assistance to start with. The IMF's three main roles are economic surveillance, lending, and capacity development. He is displaying his lack of knowledge.

    I quite agree with you.

Sajith is wondering around with no clue as to what they would different. Granted, that RW does not either and is being led by his 'masters'. He just wanted to become the prez by any means. It is the logical free market policies of the IMF, for which we did not need the IMF, got us away from the brink of disaster. The million dollar question is, does NPP know how to get us prospering again without borrowing for projects which are useless for the country, but the sale of which brings 'commissions' for the 'agents'? Free market economy is not selling the country off to foreigners without evaluating the future impact of them on the citizenry.

Why IMF to feed a local issue, donate 10% of the wages of parliamentarians and pay for such activities. If you want to go to IMF for everything, no need for Politicians.

Anil Fernando Wednesday, 13 March 2024 08:28 AM

IMF is there to maintain global financial stability. Not for nutritional packages

Let's see what the IMF think of the latest SJB stunt plan Wednesday, 13 March 2024 12:01 PM

Already Sri Lanka is refusing to pay debts due for five years. Now the latest stunt by Sajith. With the size of the military and the luxury of life for those like Ranil and the MPs in parliament, all this seems a mad joke.

    Felix Wednesday, 13 March 2024 12:32 PM

why do want IMF a foreign entity to feed your citizens? Do you not work and earn to make your own living? Always want outsiders to solve your internal problems and then talk of sovereignty

Tissa Fernando Thursday, 14 March 2024 12:08 AM

Is Sajith suffering from malnutrition now?

    Gona Friday, 15 March 2024 02:43 PM

You idiot Gobbaya. IMF is doing business on behalf of rich countries. In rich countries, the interest rates are low. So they lend money through IMF to crisis ridden countries at very high rates. Rarely they offer financing to Western countries when they are cash trapped, but at lower rates. This is how it works. It won't give anything in kind You idiot Puthano. Ask for some cow feed to distribute among your herd, it's election season. Hooooooo
