The Supreme Court today issued an interim order preventing the Treasury Secretary, the Attorney General who is representing the President and any other state official from withholding any funds allocated for the purpose of conducting Local Government Polls 2023.

Supreme Court three-judge-bench comprising Justices Preethi Padman Surasena, Janak De Silva and Priyantha Fernando made this order consequent to a Fundamental Rights petition filed by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara. The Supreme Court further granted leave to proceed with this Fundamental Rights petition.

President’s Counsel Upul Jayasuriya appeared for the petitioner. Additional Solicitor General Priyantha Navana appeared for the Attorney General. Saliya Pieris PC appeared for the Election Commission. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)

SJB walked right into the RW trap. Now all what RW and Treasury has to do is ensure no funds are allocated for the General Election until it is actually due in 2024. A right royal Googly

    Era Friday, 03 March 2023 04:24 PM

What crap is that ? Elections are held when they are due by the law.

    Lankan Friday, 03 March 2023 04:24 PM

That's will happen only in your and Ranils dreams.

    Rockstar Friday, 03 March 2023 04:25 PM

    Gosh you are a genius

    Mizaru Friday, 03 March 2023 05:01 PM

The Treasury does not belong to Ranil’s papa. When elections are due the parliament has to allocate funds. Sri Lanka is still a democratic country.

    Nihal Friday, 03 March 2023 05:13 PM

That is why RW is called the “Atawane” Janadipathi.

    Buddhist Friday, 03 March 2023 06:10 PM

No way, Ranil will not have the right to hold a General or Presidential election if the LG election shows a result against the UNP-SLPP union.

    Era Friday, 03 March 2023 04:09 PM

    Wow...wow... wow...Thank you SC

It’s heartening to see our judges are taking steps to protect our fundamental right ,to vote to choose our leaders when that right is being denied to us by the leader ,who was appointed by 134 scoundrels in the parliament.

Get back to paying taxing instead of playing about Friday, 03 March 2023 04:38 PM

What is the Supreme Court up to? If they demand allocated funds, which of course depend on income. As the allocation depends on the forecast of tax collection. Ranil already said there is no funds, so the allocation meant nothing the face of that already. Now government will de-allocate funds, and then no more election possibly at all. Supreme court should stop meddling in these legal matters, and get back to paying the taxes put on judges.

Suhada Malli ,read the article again or am I missing something.

SC making poor decision will lead to worse social outcomes Friday, 03 March 2023 05:01 PM

The SC will completely fail with it's trying to ensure Constitution is kept to. Parliament brought conflicting laws to nullify the Provincial Council elections, and SC insensitive to the horror mess they are opening the doors. Watch as the Parliament finds a way to ensure SC decision is completely lobotomised.

Good decision by the SC to uphold Democracy and prevent Anarchy.

EC should immediately petition the court to stop changing any of the present members of the EC.

    pradeep Friday, 03 March 2023 06:11 PM

Good Move by SC, little hope for the people. It was well understood RW was playing games as elections will expose people's wish,

Priyanee Wijesekera Friday, 03 March 2023 06:40 PM

Nobody seems to understand that the election on the 9th of March was not validly declared .The blame for that should rest with the elections commission, not With the treasury Secretary .

As much as this judgement reaffirms our faith in the judiciary it also strengthens our belief that the pin president is doing everything he can to destroy democracy in Sri Lanka.
