A vehicle in which a Russian family on board was attacked by a wild elephant when they attempted to take a selfie with the jumbo straying near the Minneriya National Park on Habarana-Polonnaruwa main road.

The Russian family with two children aged 8 years and 10 months had a narrow shave but were heavily shaken. Investigations revealed that the wild elephant chased them when they went near the animal and tried to take a selfie. They had taken to their heels and escaped and boarded the vehicle, but the angry elephant jumbo smashed the vehicle causing minor damages.

Minneriya police said the family was on a trip to Polonnaruwa by a rented vehicle and met with the incident on their way back. They left after making a statement. (Karunaratne Gamage)

It sad that humans seldom realise that these are wild animals and to respect them accordingly. Also, SL has a habit of treating anyone with white skin as demigods regardless of the fact that some of them can sadly be classified as "white trash". This is an example of what can happen!!
