Colombo, March 25 (Daily Mirror) - An income of Rs. 3,439 million was earned in February this year by exporting coconut water from Sri Lanka, the Coconut Development Authority (CDA) said.
According to the data from the CDA, the amount earned by exporting coconut water in February 2023 is Rs. 2,705 million.
There has been an increase in export income of Rs. 734 million by the pre-spring months of this year compared to last year, CDA Chairman Professor Roshan Perera said.
These facts were revealed during a discussion chaired by Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera this morning (25).
The Minister said that if it is possible to save the Rs. 300 million in coconuts that are lost annually due to damages caused by wildlife, then it will be possible to earn more income, thereby further increasing the income of coconut growers.

How have they exported in what packaging? Who are the exporters?

Thats good but to be realistic should give volume figures as well because of the exchange rate which can vary. Also where is the plan to increase production nationally otherwise there will be no nuts to extract water from as the coconut has many competing uses and the acreage could be diminishing and plucking methods have to be improved. So much to do to bring the industry into the modern age

We have to export every possible thing from our country. It is full of opportunities but our people have become lazy since the open market.

Yet no structured approach to eliminate coconut diseases or provide decent growing material for coconut farmers. Only good thing they know to do is cap the coconut prices and force the burden of loss on farmers.

Very commendable! Praise when and where it's due. Now rather than squeezing out till the last drop of juice, try and expand the area of cultivation, improve the soil levels and general care for the existing trees, continuously and to a programme.
Who is responsible for for short fall? Tuesday, 26 March 2024 05:43 PM
This high value export by Coconut Development Authority (CDA) so secretive, most of the citizen do not know that they are throwing away a huge amount of foreign Exchange. The volume exported should be more if the public is aware of this aspect.

As usual Sri Lanka might be a bit too late because countries like Thailand Malaysia Indonesia Phillipines etc. sarted exporting coconut water to the international market more than five years ago. Who said theres no Thembili in any other part of the world? In fact I was on holiday in Bali recently and there was plenty of Thembili for sale everywhere and it cost me only one Indonesian Rupiah.

The exporter should promote the collection of coconut water from every household or should let the know how of preserving this water for householders to collect and pay them accordingly. When I visited Australia recently, drank coconut water packaged in cardboard packages like they do here for Kotmale milk.If water is collected from household the exporter could collect a substantial amount.
