Rohitha Abeygunawardena’s daughter surrenders

Panadura, July 30 (Daily Mirror) - Melanie Abeygunawardena, the daughter of MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena, surrendered to the Panadura-Walana Anti-Vice Squad today in connection with the investigation involving the illegal import and registration of a luxury SUV.

She had been wanted by police over the sale of the SUV to the son of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Jagath Vithana. The vehicle, a high-end Jeep, was seized by the Anti-Vice Squad during a raid in Mathugama on 19 July, which also led to the arrest of Vithana’s son.

Investigations revealed that the Jeep was smuggled into the country and fraudulently registered, initially under Melanie’s name. In October 2024, the vehicle was reportedly sold to MP Vithana’s son.

Last week, Rohitha Abeygunawardena’s son-in-law was remanded till August 1 over the same allegation while Jagath Vithana’s son, was released on bail by the Mathugama Magistrate’s Court.

Melanie had evaded arrest until today.

The corruption is grave, damaging and widespread and most are much more severe than this. e.g A specialist claims (in YouTube) he has evidence money was printed at the same facility where money is printed officially and converted the rupees to dollars. Government should appoint a special commission under emergency powers to investigate all these crimes speedily. Otherwise this slow process will undermine the government because the offenders are very powerful

Under previous regimes what was illegal seemed to be acceptable hence many people were doing this import and assembly of vehicles to circumvent taxes. Now that the law is being applied all this is being reversed. Unfortunately, those without integrity who bought into the lawless games are now having to face consequences. The lesson is, even if someone else does the wrong thing or the entire system is corrupt, one should refuse to be party to it and stand on the side of integrity.
