Colombo, November 24 (Daily Mirror) - A new gazette will be issued making it compulsory for all buses including long-distance passenger transport buses to obtain a basic roadworthiness certificate from January 1, Transport Minister Bimal Ratnayake announced today.

Speaking to the media at the Makumbura Multimodal Centre (MMC), the Minister said the roadworthiness test must be carried out annually and each bus will be required to obtain an official certificate.

He urged bus owners to get their vehicles inspected at certified testing centres, noting that the roadworthiness certificate will be essential during police investigations in the event of an accident or any other road incident.

Is this a law? then pass it properly in the parliament. you are not a king to make rules from the ministry. this should only be done for older busses otherwise its just adding more cost to bus owners which then will pass the cost to passengers

Hope the bus owners will not manipulate obataining the certificate.. they should be tested for using Kerosine mix as well.

will the same apply to all CTB buses, trains and all govt. vehicles including tri forces. most of the govt. vehicles are unfit to road

All these certifications are great but there are loop holes. For example, the Emission Test has become corrupt. All Emission Tests are conducted by private organization where their workers are also corrupt. All Emission Tests can be manipulated and bribed to pass a vehicle. This is happening blatantly. Even minimum papers that are required to commence an emission test is ignored if it is not available. Corruption requires high levels of punishment whether in Government sector or private Sector.

Great idea. Please ensure that there are stringent laws against persons issuing incorrect road worthy documents....as in SL those fellows will do anything for money. Also, heavy fines should be imposed on persons giving bribes to get a road worthy certificate.

There must be unified system with bus island wide bus records to check and verify in future .A paper certificate means nothing if there is no information in the system about the busses and its issues .If a bus fails it must be rectified and reappeared before its issued a certificate .Police should be able to check this too
