Colombo, Feb. 2 (Daily Mirror) - A protest was held in Vavuniya against the government’s decision to resume the Kivul Oya Reservoir Development Project, with a large number of residents gathering to voice their opposition.
Parliamentarian Shanakiyan Rasamanickam, along with several representatives, met officials and warned the Divisional Secretary of Nedunkerny about the possible consequences of proceeding with the project.
Rasamanickam also urged the District Secretary to convey a message to the President, stating that the demonstration reflected only a fraction of the resistance to the proposed development.
The Cabinet of Ministers recently approved the revival of the Kivul Oya project, which was originally launched in 2011 as a major irrigation scheme aimed at addressing long-standing water shortages in the Vavuniya and Mullaitivu districts.
The project, which falls under the Mahaweli ‘L’ zone, was estimated to cost Rs. 4,170 million and was initially scheduled to be completed within four years.
