All residential students in universities, colleges, and higher education institutions located in disaster-affected areas remain safe, Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa confirmed during a media briefing held today.
He said that the impact of the ongoing natural disaster on the education sector is being continuously monitored and managed effectively. Commenting further, Kaluwewa noted that the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination cannot be held as previously scheduled due to the widespread disaster situation. He also reaffirmed that schools will now reopen on December 16.
Providing an update on affected institutions, Kaluwewa said that teachers and students residing in the Pulathisipura and Mahaweli Colleges of Education, as well as students in the universities of Nagenahira, Agnidigha, Uva Wellassa, and Peradeniya, are safe. He added that food and beverages are being supplied without disruption under proper management and urged parents not to be unduly concerned.
He also acknowledged that communication difficulties persist in several areas due to ongoing power outages.
