Resettle flood affected people in safe areas: Cardinal

Colombo, Dec. 2 (Daily Mirror)- Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith urged authorities to resettle flood affected people in safe areas which do not go under water.

Cardinal Ranjith came out with this remark during his visit to flood affected people in Uswetikeiyawa in the Colombo District.

"Sri Lanka experiences rains frequently. Therefore, people in the vulnerable areas need safe shelter. They should be resettled in safe areas," the Cardinal said.

Don’t waste tax payers money in doing that! How many tsunami flats and schemes were given free? They will rent it out and return to the vulnerable areas! They have commercial interests in being in such areas. Also, so many ngos and service oriented societies help them , they stand to loose much more if relocated.

What always happens is that the people in vulnerable areas are resettled at government expense when a disaster happens and several months later, a complete new set of people come and grab those areas left by previous people. So when the next disaster happens it is the same story again.
