Colombo, July 3 (Daily Mirror) - The Central Environmental Authority (CEA), marking International Polythene Bag Free Day, has called on the public to minimize the use of polythene and switch to environmentally friendly, reusable alternatives.
In a special awareness message, the CEA warned that the environmental damage caused by the use of polythene, whether knowingly or unknowingly, is significant and poses a serious threat to ecosystems and living organisms.
The authority said that a polythene bag discarded immediately after use can take hundreds of years to decompose, causing long-term harm to the environment and disrupting natural ecosystems.
Highlighting the collective responsibility of society, the CEA urged the public to reduce their reliance on single-use polythene products and adopt sustainable alternatives that can be used repeatedly to help protect the environment for future generations.
